Walking around London, the alarm running regularly has been neglected by me and my friends after having being London for nearly 5 months, we found that it becomes a normal background sound rather than gives us the feeling of surprising and anxiety when people heard it the first time.
From the literature, I learned that for ancient people and, sound could be vital for their survival. They listened to forests, every tiny sound could tell them the whereabouts of the animals, which could lead them to deers or help them to evade dangers. Though living in the urban city, we buy food in supermarket rather than hunt in the wild, we also don’t need to hide from dangerous animals. Sound are still meaningful for us in many different levels. We should listen to the every sound in our life as ancient people listened to the forest.
I also interviewed many people about their experience about daily sound world. Some people agreed that they were getting used to the daily sound. Some said that they are bothered by some sounds. Some said they got hearing impair as they grew up.
Can sound be played with? Can we make a new and innovate experience for our ear? Will the sound world where big sound gets lower while tiny sound become louder be interesting? What about the sound you speak retains and be played again and again to help you remember something? How about entering the world of Mario by replacing the sound in real world to the sound effects in the game?
I tried to use Max/msp to realise part of the sound effects.
Finally, I made a film to communicate my design ideas.
